Mumbai, September 11: Today marks the 124th birth anniversary of Acharya Vinoba Bhave, the social reformer and the great Gandhian. Born on September 11, 1895 in Gagode, Bombay (now Mumbai), Vinobha Bhave is best known for his land reform movement called the Bhoodan Yajna or Bhoodan movement (Land-Gift Movement). Bhave decided at an early age that he wanted to dedicate his life to the cause of India’s freedom and social reform.

With this intention, he joined Mahatma Gandhi’s ashram in Sabarmati, Ahmedabad and abandoned his high school studies. Bhave was deeply moved by the way people lived in India’s rural areas and villages. He decided to live a life of austerity.
