Every Day on September 16, Malaysia Day or Hari Malaysia is celebrated in the Federation of Malaysia. It is a public holiday in all the states of Malaysia if in any year September 16 falls on a Sunday then the next day is declared as a public holiday. On this day, back in 1963, the Malaysian Federation was formed when the United Kingdom, the Federation of Malaya, Sarawak, North Borneo, and Singapore signed the “Malaysia Agreement”.

According to this agreement, Malaya, North Borneo (now Sabah), Sarawak, and Singapore formed into a single state. However, two years later in the year 1965 on August 9, Singapore left the federation. Happy Malaysia Day Wishes

History of Malaysia Day 2020

Originally, 1 June 1963 was selected to sign to the Malaysian Agreement but later it was postponed to later the same year on August 31. August 31 is also the independence day of the Federation of Malaya. But again it was postponed to September 16 when the neighboring countries Indonesia and the Philippines raised some issues related to the formation of a federation.

In the meantime, the United Nations team visited North Borneo and Sarawak to investigate the participation of both of these states. Later, they found out no referendum was issued to any of these states regarding the new federation.

Until 2010, Malaysia Day was a public holiday in Sabah and Sarawak only but on 19 October 2009 Prime Minister Najib Razak declared this as National Holiday after having a question-answer session in the Parliament.

Malaysia Day 2020 Celebration

One of the most popular cultures is to listen and sing the “Malaysia Forever” folk song composed by Bobby Gimby on 16 September 1963 to celebrate the formation of the Malaysia Federation. Later, Prime Minister gave a nickname to Bobby Gimby “The Pied Piper of Canada”. This song was telecasted just a day before the formation in the schools and it became an instant hit.
