Every year, August 12 is celebrated as International Youth Day across the world to focus on development and protection of youth. The theme of IYD 2019 is, “Transforming education”, to make education more equitable, relevant and inclusive to all youths. There are around 1.8 billion young people in the world. However, over half of the children aged 6 to 14 lack basic knowledge and maths skills, despite attending school. August 12 was designated as IYD by the UN General Assembly in 1999 and serves as an annual day to celebrate the role of youth in the society as well as it offers an opportunity to raise awareness of problems and challenges faced by youths around the world.
IYD 2019 theme “Transforming education” is to make education more accessible to all youth. “International Youth Day 2019 will examine how Governments, young people and youth-led and youth-focused organizations, as well as other stakeholders, are transforming education so that it becomes a powerful tool to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,” United Nations explained.
“On International Youth Day, we celebrate the young people, youth-led organizations, Governments and others who are working to transform education and uplift young people everywhere,” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said.
