Day 2 review: Visitors Zimbabwe got into a strong position after bowling Bangladesh out for just 143 in 51 overs, taking a vital lead of 139. Tendar Chatara and Sikandar Raza picked up three wickets apiece. Bangladesh are under pressure of having a lot of catching up to do on a pitch that won’t get easier to bat.

Welcome back for the second session. Conditions have gone a bit grim with a few clouds hovering over. Out come the batsmen – Hamilton Masakadza and Sean Williams. Mehidy Hasan to start off proceedings.

… DAY 3, SESSION 2 …

Wickets, wickets, wickets. And in clusters. That is what can bring Bangladesh back into the game. They are trying to slow down the proceedings but that has not helped them a big deal so far. Another decent session for the tourists might see the lead cross 300. Can the hosts produce what happened after Day 2, Lunch? Join us back at 12.40 pm local (0640 GMT).

Nothing much has happened so far but the pitch is showing signs of deteriorating. Batting is going to get even tougher as the game progresses but for now, the Zimbabwean batsmen have done well. Hamilton Masakadza has been soaking up all the pressure at one end while Brendan Taylor tried to get some quick runs. Eventually, the first hour was a watchful one, while the second was compensating for the sluggish hour.

Superb session for the visitors. 30 overs, 90/2. The lead has gone in excess of 200 and another 50 would be more than handy.

2.3 Abu Jayed to H Masakadza, Lovely shot. Full and wide outside off, a hint of outswing, Masakadza drives it wide of mid off and almost gets a boundary. But the soggy outfield slows the ball down and the fielder is able to stop it. Three runs taken. 5/0

2.2 Abu Jayed to Chari, Landed outside off, Chari gets a good stride forward and pushes it towards cover for a single. 2/0

2.1 Abu Jayed to Chari, Full and wide outside off, a loosener, left alone. 1/0

The umpires make their way out to the middle. Bangladesh get into a team huddle. Hamilton Masakadza and Brian Chari walk out to the centre. Abu Jayed to start off proceedings. Brian to face. Here we go!

Sikandar Raza is having a chat with Ed Rainsford. Smiles on Zimbabwe getting into a dominant position after a long time and credits the entire team for the united effort. On batting today, Raza says that the aim will be to get the target around 300 – so scoring around 180-200 would be great. Adds that as the game goes on, spinners will be a lot more effective on this track. Is also surprised with the way Bangladesh opened the floodgates but is wary of the home side bouncing back. At the same time, wants his side to maintain the intensity and show the world that they can compete in Test cricket by pulling off a win.

PITCH REPORT – Tino Mawoyo observes that even though 20 wickets have fallen on 2 days, the track has not deteriorated much. It has been more due to some disciplined bowling. Adds that the wicket is drier and has opened up but batting is not that difficult.

WEATHER – After bright sunshine over the weekend, heavy overcast skies welcome us on the third day. Around 2 in the morning, heavy thunderstorms hit the city and there are predictions of those continuing today as well. In fact, credit to the ground staff for drying the ground so soon, that too, without any sunshine.

Normally, Day 3 is considered to be a moving day. But this match has already got on the skates post Lunch on Sunday. Bangladesh, in totally one-day mode, just threw their wickets away, playing loose shots and have given Zimbabwe more than an upper hand in this Test. Will the visitors be able to press on the advantage? Or will the hosts roar back? Hello and a warm welcome to the third day of the first Test between Bangladesh and Zimbabwe in Sylhet.

… DAY 3, MORNING SESSION …

The hosts were abysmal in their approach. Didn’t apply themselves with the bat and never got any partnership going. They, however, are still not out of this. They will hope their spinners spin a web in the second innings and give them a reasonable target to chase. Once again all eyes will be on Taijul Islam who bagged a 6-wicket haul in the first innings. Right then, all to play for. Join us for Day 3 at 1000 local (0400 GMT) for all the action. Enjoy your Sunday and you can catch some more cricket later on in the evening when India face Windies (at 1330 GMT) and Pakistan lock horns with New Zealand (at 1600 GMT). Cheers!

The umpires have a look at the light meter and then take the bails off. That is STUMPS, Day 2! What a day for the visitors! They picked up wickets at regular intervals and ensured they get a lead of 139 runs. Their camp will be a happy one now. They will look to get as many runs as possible and then wrap up the hosts once again.
