Sri Lanka need to win this one to keep the Series alive. They aren’t in any good position to do so. Sri Lanka faced a batting debacle in the first ODI. In the second one, they batted well to haul a good enough total. It only took a couple of un-droppable drops to cost them the game. Indeed Sri Lanka haven’t been competitive in ODI’s since Sanga and Mahela retired. Let me remind you, it has been a lifetime since the two retired. They have lost 27 of the last 36 ODIs they have played.
South Africa did restore some dignity with twin comfortable wins but they weren’t near perfect. In simple words South Africa aren’t World Beaters and we clearly saw that in a 5-1 thumping against India in their own courtyard. With two seemingly comfortable wins they would have restored some dignity of their own. Lungi Ngidi continues to impress, much like Tabraiz Shamsi and Andile Phehlukwayo. De kock broke his own streak of low scores in the previous game, seeming more like the talent he has been acknowledged. Faf seems all but set until he reaches 49. South Africa do however have their own set of worries. Amla is well past his prime and this is apparent given that his career average has dropped from 54 to 50. That is still good enough but that does need to be maintained.
